Traditional (Hellenistic)

Cancer is Saturn's detriment, opposite his Capricorn house, in the Moon's cardinal water. The older authors say a planet in detriment works far from home, here the cold planet of limit set in the warm waters of nurture: emotional security that must be built against early scarcity of it. This is a redirection, not a defect: the native learns to mother themselves. The gift is deep emotional resilience and self-reliance; the cost is a guardedness that armors the heart.
