Modern
Mars, in the modern reading, is Mars is drive and desire: assertion, courage, anger, sexuality, and the will to act and to compete. It is your energy and aggression, how you go after what you want and defend what is yours. Wherever Mars falls by sign and house, and however it aspects the rest of the chart, this principle is colored and located, becoming one of the central themes of the personality.
Traditional (Hellenistic)
In the tradition, Mars is the lesser malefic, signifying war, cutting, fever, courage, conflict, and labor; hot and dry, a nocturnal malefic, he governs iron, the blood, the muscles, and the gall, and shows soldiers, surgeons, and where strife and force arise. Read its sign for how it expresses, its house for where, its aspects for how it gets along, and its dignity and condition for how well it does its work.
Lean in — Develop Mars's principle consciously; it is a core part of who you are.
Watch for — Disown Mars; what it governs will act out anyway, less consciously.
